Fallen Angels

When our lecture introduced this film to us I honestly didn’t think much about it. I didn’t think I would enjoy it that much properly because I didn’t have any expectation about it. I went straight into the film and it was a bit hard to adjust to the style of the film. I consider myself a huge fan of asian cinema but this film torn down my ideas of this sector of cinema. It’s nothing I’ve seen before and I loved it. I loved it so much that I made my friends watch it and they enjoyed it as much as I did. The visuals are mind blowingly beautiful and the quick camera movement at times make you feel like your with them.

If we are talking about Fallen Angel (1995, Kar-wai Won) we have to talk about the camera angles. It was one of the techniques you will properly notice. These camera angles are called, canted or dutch angles I’ll give you an example from this film.

In this still image you can see that the camera is not level with the subject. It has been deliberately slanted to one side. Filmmaker use this type of camera angle to create confusion, madness, disorientation etc. In this case I believe it trying to give more of a dramatic feel and maybe a bit of madness because later on the character starts to ride the pig with much enjoyment.

The camera movement is very fast specially went there’s an action scene. A great example of this is when the killer goes to collect his payment for killing someone and four guys attack him. The attacker put out their guns and that’s went it kicks off, the fight. The fight starts and so does the quick camera movement this movement compliment the action that’s happening. It causes you to feel like you’re in the middle of this gun fight. If am correct I believe this camera movement is from using a hand-held camera.

This film in particular has a unique style most of the film is very glow and saturated like in the still image below. The lights are almost bury it made me feel like am in a dream sequences.

One of my favorite parts of the film had to be when Ho Chi Moo and Charlie are at the restaurant and he begins to tell us that he’s falling in love with her and the scene changes colour to black and white like in the image below.

It also become sort of like stop motion I think the fps was lowered because the picture wasn’t as smooth as before but I like that fact that it changed in colour. The choice of black and white made sense of this scene beacuse you normally see wedding pictures in black and white and the reason being is you want the compete focus on the couple and works well in this scene.
